tomato soup

Posted January 27, 2012

Okay okay I know it's a new year and that I haven't blogged for a while but that's just the way it is. I'm not going to comment on the new year post any resolutions or any of that BS I am moving on. For a while now I have wanted to try and make homemade tomato soup; for those of you who know me well you might be asking why since you know that in general I do not like tomatoes. Well the why stems from one of my favorite local restaurants in down town Hudson called Urban Olive & Vine. They make an amazing tomato soup and while they wouldn't share the exact recipe, and who can blame them, they did give me a general idea of how it's made. So today I decided to give it a try.

the main ingredients chopped garlic

diced onions onions and garlic were tossed in the stockpot for a good long sweat

while the onions were sweating I prepared the tomatoes by par boiling them and dunking them in an ice bath so that they would be easier to peel.

I didn't have any homemade stock on hand so I used some organic chicken broth.

All the ingredients were in the pot - I added some turmeric which is good for joint pain and Dave's bad knee, some curry powder, some cayenne powder, and some crushed red peppers cause I like it spicy.

more simmering . . .

then some blending

and finally the finished product.

At first taste I think I used too many onions but overall it tastes good with just the right amount of spice -  till next time craft on.

Sweater Number Two

I met Ben and Jen while attending Luther Seminary in St. Paul MN.  We met when we took a great traveling class in Arizona. Ben and Jen eventually fell in love and got married. They went on to become Pastors at a church in Oregon. I miss having them around - believe it or not "church" work is incredible difficult for many different reasons and it helps to have like mined people around you. Anyhow, they recently had a beautiful baby boy. Caleb is a big boy so I decided to make him the Children's Tunic from Knitting Pure and Simple. I made the smallest size which is actually a child's size 2-4. I choose this size so that he could grow into it and wear it for a while. I used Plymouth Encore yarn and size 4 and 6 circular needles.

Till next time create on!

Thanksgiving 2011

Posted December 2, 2011

This year for Thanksgiving we drove to New Orleans to spend some time with our daughter, Sarah, who has lived there for about ten years now. Three years ago she bought a house in the lower ninth ward which is still trying to rebuild after Katrina - don't even get me started on how ridiculous it is that in this country six years after the hurricane things are still in such disrepair. Anyhow I wanted to bring Sarah a hostess gift so I made some aprons - one for her and one for me. I used a pattern and fabric I bought at the Riverside Quilting store in River Falls. The pattern was fun and easy to make - I think it took me about two hours start to finish to make the aprons.

Our meal:

Sarah recently became a middle school teacher in the NOLA public school system so we spent some time making Holiday decorations for her classroom. Here she is at work on the decorations at in her classroom.

Till next time knit and craft on!

The Baby Sweaters

Posted November 30, 2011

Once again it's been a while but I have been very busy knitting away. I have several friends who have recently had babies so I have been knitting baby sweaters plus a few things for myself. In an effort to catch you up I plan on writing several posts about the baby sweaters and other things that have been happening in my little corner of the world.  Baby sweater number one - my friend Lora and I met while attending Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Lora has been a great friend and introduced me to a great organization called Mission Jamaica. Together we went on, I think, four mission trips to the Westhaven Childrens Home an amazing experience that you should try it you are at all interested.

Lora had a beautiful baby girl about four months ago and this is the sweater I knit for her - it's a Knitting Pure & Simple pattern called Girls One Button Caridigan. I used Plymouth Encore Colorspun worsted yarn color number 7733 - I like to use a yarn that is washable for new moms. And here it is. . .

Unfortunately I can't see baby Bri in her new sweater because they live in another state so I am anxiously waiting to see a photo of her in the new sweater. Till next time knit on!

Buttercup sweater

Posted September 15, 2011

This is the final sweater that I knit this summer. I got the yarn from Knit Picks some time ago with a particular project in mind but as it happens it sat in my stash for so long that I forgot what I had intended to make with it. So in stash busting mode I searched Ravelry for something to make with the yarn and I found the Buttercup pattern by Heidi Kirrmaier. It turns out that this is now the favorite sweater of my knitted collection. I just love the way it turned out even with my very bright Knit Picks Key Lime CotLin sport weight yarn. I was worried because the yarn is so bright but I think it turned out pretty well. It was easy and fast to knit; as always I went down two needle sizes from the recommended size to obtain gauge. Hope you enjoy - knit on!
